On your second day on the deserted island you will be interested in catching fish or bugs. You can get these bugs and fish with a fishing rod and net(https://lizandjul.wixsite.com/leaflife-acnl-acnh/post/how-to-get-a-flimsy-net-in-animal-crossing-new-horizons and https://lizandjul.wixsite.com/leaflife-acnl-acnh/post/how-to-get-a-fishing-rod-in-animal-crossing-new-horizons). When you donate them to Tom Nook by saying "I found a creature". Once he gets a few of these creatures he will give you the recipe for a flimsy axe. If you are not interested in fishing or catching bugs there are some other option. You can purchase "pretty good tool recipes" at the nook stop. This will cost you 3,000 bells, but don't worry it includes other tool recipes too!
